Beautiful Thing
Beautiful Thing
Rated R | 1h 30min | Comedy, Drama, Romance | 1996 (UK)
Starring Glen Berry, Scott Neil and Linda Henry
What is it about this little U.K. charmer that turned it into such a gay classic? The answer may be its subject matter: gay teens. This 1996 film was the first in a virtual tidal wave of movies and books in which the sensitive teen misfit with a best female friend falls for the jock who turns out to be gay. But hey, haven’t most of us been there, on one side or other of the misfit/jock divide? This movie, based on a stage play by Jonathan Harvey (who also wrote the film’s screenplay), was originally intended for television, but it was so successful that the producers decided to give it a theatrical release. And let’s not forget the inspired soundtrack of Mama Cass songs — an example of a perfect fit between music and movie subject matter. Make your own kind of music, indeed. -- TheBacklot.

Rated TV-MA | 1h 39min | Comedy, Drama, Romance | 1998 (USA)
Starring Chris Stafford, Tina Holmes and Anderson Gabrych
David Moreton’s 1998 film, Edge of Seventeen, opens like a familiar coming-of-age movie. Written by (and drawn from the life of) screenwriter Todd Stephens, it follows Eric (Chris Stafford), an awkward, gangly white boy, and his best friend Maggie (Tina Holmes), as they end their 1984 junior school year and launch themselves into the promise of summer. Fuelled by a car-ride lip sync to a cassette tape of Toni Basil’s “Mickey,” the pair begin their summer working at an amusement park restaurant where everything—the food, the walls, the uniforms—seems to be some shade of brown. But the performatively saccharine customer service voice of butch lesbian Angie, played by Lea DeLaria, hints that there is something beyond what we see on the surface.

All of Greenleaf, Indiana, is watching this year's telecast of the Oscars as Hollywood heartthrob and local boy made good Cameron Drake (Matt Dillion) has been nominated for his first ever Best Actor Oscar for his latest movie role as a gay soldier. Cameron's high school English teacher Howard Brackett (Kevin Cline) is overjoyed when Cameron wins the award and mentions Howard's contribution in his acting life. That joy turns to horror when Cameron mentions to the worldwide audience that Howard is gay, especially horrific to Howard as he is engaged to fellow teacher Emily Montgomery (Joan Cusack), a woman with self-esteem issues as she had battled weight issues most of her life before she lost seventy-five pounds for the wedding. Howard's life is totally disrupted as Hollywood media descends on Greenleaf in order to get Howard's story. The rest of Greenleaf also openly wonders if Howard is indeed gay, as he exhibits many stereotypical gay tendencies, such as being neat, and loving music, dancing, poetry and Barbra Streisand. His cause is not helped in that his and Emily's relationship has not yet been consummated. The one person not concerned is Emily, who trusts Howard. As Howard continues to deny being gay to his family, friends and colleagues, he begins to examine himself hypercritically if only because if others believe he's gay, there may be some merit to the claim, as well as because of an incident that occurs with Hollywood reporter Peter Malloy, who is doing a week-long piece on Howard leading up to his and Emily's wedding. But Cameron Drake may be able to provide some overall perspective to what is happening to Howard and the frenzy he has caused.

Jumping between Manhattan and Fire Island, vignettes carry us from the it-couldn't-happen-to-me mentality of the early days of the disease to the invasive effect it has had on all of our lives, today. The title of the film comes from the New York Times' refusal to acknowledge homosexual relationships in their obituary section during this period. Sam, not the type for one night stands, still vows never to date a friend to avoid such double blows. With regard to relationships, Sam's best female friend since first year, Stasia Cooper, conversely never considers herself to have a boyfriend regardless of what the outside world sees in she not believing in commitment. On the Valentine's weekend, Sam reluctantly agrees, as a favor to friends, to what he considers his worst nightmare in giving Harry Turpin a ride - nine hours - to their hometown, Harry, also a student at the same college, who tormented Sam all through high school for being gay. While Sam's initial impression of Harry is still the same - self-absorbed, adolescent minded, the type of guy that strings girlfriends along until it becomes too messy for him - it isn't until midway through their trip that Sam views Harry in a slightly different light on an admission: that Harry had long ago come out as being pansexual. That discovery at least leads to them having a more fulsome discussion about their lives on the remainder of the drive. With bumps along the way over the next few years, Sam and Harry teeter on the brink of friendship to being in that same vein of friend for Sam that Malcolm was and Stasia still is. As Sam develops even deeper feelings, he has to decide if he will break his vow not to date friends. In the end, generally controlled Sam may be taken over by emotions, both good and bad
